Kenya: President Accused of Breaking Curfew
Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta, has been slammed for allegedly contravening government regulations regarding activity being carried out past curfew hours.
Last month, the 59-year-old statesman extended the night curfew – 10PM until 4AM in the capital, Nairobi, and 7PM until 4AM for the rest of the country – by 60 days in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
However, on Tuesday night, 6 July, Kenyatta opened five new hospitals in Nairobi County. He explained that doing this in the evening was to ensure that COVID-19 protocols were observed.
He explained: “It would have been impossible to go … during the day because of the number of people who would have been out there. It would have been very difficult for us to do the job we wanted to do.”
The action has drawn much criticism online. One person tweeted: “Now [Kenyatta] should lift the curfew as he too [sic] sees the value of working extra hours in the night.”
Another said: “President Uhuru Kenyatta should be tomorrow be arraigned in court of law for breaking curfew hours.”
Kenya has recorded 186 453 cases of COVID-19 to date. The tally includes the deaths of 3 697 citizens, and 129 165 who have recovered.
